SEMARC BOARD MEETING

DECEMBER 10, 2007

Attendees: Dick Roberts (N0UC), Steve Howard (AB0XE), Bernie Hanson

(KA0GX), Pete Sigtermans (N0FKC), John Regan (KA0HYR), Pat Story

(W0MCQ), Skip Jackson (KS0J), Jim Boyd (KC0QCO)

Bernie Hanson (KA0GX), treasurer, reported our current checking account balance is $1,385.81.  The balance, he said, reflects the total after the club’s liability insurance has been paid.

Proposed area high school scholarships: John Regan (KA0HYR) described initial contacts he has made with counselors at Woodbury, Park, Hastings, Lake Elmo, Mahtomedi and Stillwater high schools.  Through personal and e-mail contacts, he said, he advised counselors of ARRL Foundation scholarship opportunities for students who are licensed amateurs.  Deadline for applying is the first week of February, 2008.

Based on his experience as SoWashCo, District 833, Superintendent (retired), John detailed his insights into the high school scholarship process: counselors are very receptive to awards in the $200-$500 range, they are very helpful in establishing criteria, application procedures and deadlines for the awards and they can aid in the selection process.  Scholarships are a win-win, John noted.  They are a source of pride for both the student and parents and a $250 scholarship, for example, can pay for a semester’s books.

Questions to come before the general membership at the Jan. 14, 2008 Annual Banquet: 1) Does SEMARC wish to fund scholarships? 2) If yes,  Does SEMARC wish to combine efforts with SARA (Stillwater Amateur Radio Association) in establishing and awarding scholarships?  3) Will  members fund the scholarships?  Or will funds be solicited outside?

In addition to the ARRL Foundation, scholarships are currently available through QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association) and Ten:Ten (10 meter net).

Other discussion centered on re-activating area amateurs who are currently licensed and recruiting new hams.  Commenced 7:30p.  Adjourned 9:45p.

The monthly meeting was cancelled do to Holidays.
