Immediate Release:

Caleb Boe, Cottage Grove, receives first scholarship awarded by South East Metro Amateur Radio Club based in Cottage Grove

Caleb Boe of Cottage Grove was awarded a $500 scholarship Monday evening, August 8, in a special ceremony at the Park Grove Library.  The award, the first ever made by the South East Metro Amateur Radio Club (SEMARC) was given in memory of David E. Harrell, founder and first president of the club.

Caleb, son of Don and Linda Boe, was named based on his outstanding academic record, character, leadership qualities and activity in amateur radio according to James Boyd, scholarship committee chair.  Caleb, home schooled throughout both his elementary and high school years, graduated this spring.  He also completed one and a half years of credits at Inver Hills Community College.

The award was presented by Dave’s widow, Jenny Harrell of Cottage Grove.  In making the award, she remembered Dave’s passion for helping youth become interested in amateur radio.  Many earned their first ham license with Dave as their instructor, she recalled.  Dave worked more than 35 years at KSTP-TV, St. Paul, as a video control engineer, cameraman and studio lighting technician retiring in 1991.  He was instrumental in establishing SEMARC in 1987.

Caleb along with co-team leader Bryan Sullivan led an eleven member team consisting of Inver Hills Community College students in a NASA model rocket competition held near Huntsville, AL. this spring.  The team competed with 30 other colleges and universities in designing and constructing model rockets that would reach one mile in altitude.  The Inver Hills team placed fifth behind Utah State, MIT, Vanderbilt, and North Carolina State.

He will be attending Iowa State University, Ames, this fall majoring in engineering.  His amateur radio call sign is KD0OZK.
